With more and more people using mobile phones, to reduce the effects of radiation from mobile phone towers and handsets, the Union government has decided to conduct a study and draw up India-specific norms.

As part of the project, the Centre is setting up laboratories in metros to examine the Specific Absorption Rate of mobile phones; the Mumbai lab will be operational by March 2013.

“The study will address the Indian telecommunication sector and consider the health aspects of Indians,” said Milind Deora, Union minister of state for communications and information technology, who on Thursday launched a complaint handling system dedicated to battling high levels of radiation from mobile phone towers in Mumbai.
