In the past 17 months, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) has seized more drugs than it has in 11 years. This, officers said, was due to a stronger intelligence network among informers.
The sudden increase in seizures indicates that the demand in the city for drugs is increasing. But, due to intelligence on the transport of the contraband, they are seized more often.
Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) said, “We have been, and will continue to be, very proactive in improving our intelligence network. We have also increased our network beyond Mumbai, which has helped us tremendously. We will continue to deal in a similar way to impact the demand and sale of narcotics in the city.”
The police added that the demand for party drugs was less compared to the aforementioned drugs. However, the truth is also that most party drug consumers are youth. “Parents should keep tabs on their children. Disciplining and policing should start at home. It is sad that so many youth are addicted to party drugs.”
A close watch is also being kept on Nigerians in the city who are believed to be the biggest suppliers of expensive drugs, especially heroine and cocaine.
According to another police officer, both demand and supply of drugs is increasing in the city. “A lot of people think supply of drugs in Mumbai is the highest compared to other cities. But, they are more expensive here because frequent seizures mean they are not easily available,” he said.
The ANC had also seized 19 vehicles in which the drugs hidden in cavities in them were being transported. The seizure of vehicles in the past 17 months has also been the biggest, according to the police.
The ANC registered 197 cases in the past 17 months and arrested 354 persons transporting drugs, including 47 Nigerians nabbed with cocaine. Most of the arrested are from Mumbai.
“There are several reasons behind the increase in the number of seizures made by the ANC. While, intelligence and networking are important, motivating policemen is also vital as it is not money that can inspire you to work harder but appreciation and encouragement along with rewards,” said Sunil Paraskar, deputy commissioner of police (ANC).
According to the ANC, they have to keep up with new techniques and methods that drug smugglers adapt, like the recent case in which the contraband was hidden in a CNG cylinder.
These are almost impossible to trace if not for the information provided beforehand.
