The Thane police, which arrested three civic officials, a corporator, a policeman, a real estate agent and a building materials supplier on Sunday in connection with the building collapse in Mumbra, have not specified the roles each of them have played in the construction of this unauthorised building at Shil Phata.

While Thane police commissioner KP Raghuvanshi said it indicates builder-politician-officials nexus, he said they need to be interrogated for more details. “We have just made the arrests. The exact role of the accused in furthering the crime will be ascertained soon during questioning,” he said.

The police on Sunday said the illegal seven-storeyed building was constructed in a span of just two to three months and people were asked to occupy the flats immediately to prevent the Thane Municipal Corporation from demolishing it.

Responding to allegations that the police did not give protection to the TMC staff for demolition of illegal constructions, Raghuvanshi said the police have been giving protection every alternate day. “At least 167 illegal structures were razed in Thane last year,” he said.

A senior police officer from Thane, on condition of anonymity, said: “Civic officials overlook illegal structures. It is not possible that a seven-storey illegal building was constructed without the knowledge of civic authorities. Negotiations start from when the foundation of such structures is laid,” he said.
