You’d probably not care to give it a second look.
And yet, the orange dumper truck has become the cynosure of many an eye with people flocking near the railway tracks to watch it as it glides on the tracks.
The Central Railway has converted this road dumper truck into a quick service truck to expedite work a project funded by the World Bank.
Its tyres have been replaced with rail wheels and a few technical changes have been made to its axle wheels.
The vehicle lumbers on a newly laid additional rail corridor between Kurla and Thane stations.
The truck is handy to transport ballast (chipped grey stones ladled on railway track) besides and other paraphernalia used at the site of laying of the new tracks.
“Such converted trucks speed up work,” an engineer at the site said on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media. “Since the railway tracks are newly laid, we cannot take traditional rail wagons on them as they would require an engine too.”
The Rs 200-crore Kurla-Thane fifth and sixth line project is in its final stages of completion and more road trucks are likely to be converted like this.
“The truck, a self-propelled vehicle, does not require an engine to run like a traditional rail wagon would. It helps quick transportation of raw material from one place to another. Besides, the dumper truck does not require any human intervention to empty the contents on the track,” he said.
About the cost element, officials said the contractors working on the project with the railways, had converted the truck in a week.
“We converted it at Bhandup where track-laying was completed. Once the project ends, the truck will be reconverted to its original form,” the engineer said.
