The city witnessed a flood of weddings on Akshaya Tritiya. Considered one of the most auspicious period in the Hindu calendar, Akshaya Tritiya (which falls in the month of Vaishakha) and the days leading up to it, see thousands of weddings every year, despite the heat.
“I attended at least seven weddings in the last four days,” said interior designer Bindiya Chhabria (27).
While a mythological explanation says Akshaya Tritiya is the birthday of Parashurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the festival also falls on the day following Adhik Mas, the additional 13th month of the Hindu calendar, which is considered inauspicious.
“Since no marriages take place in the 13th month, this period allows you to marry without matching horoscopes or looking for a muhurat,” said Prakash Gidwani, a trustee of Sindhi organisation Purshottam Jhulelal Trust.
