The state government, on Tuesday, appointed senior counsel Raja Thakare as the special public prosecutor (SPP) for the trial in the murder case of senior crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey.
A notification to this effect was issued by the government. Thakare has earlier been the SPP in several high-profile cases of CBI such as the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam by Abdul Karim Telgi, July 11 serial train blasts, 2006 Aurangabad arms haul and cases against alleged gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli.
Dey was allegedly murdered by shooters of the Chhota Rajan gang on June 11, 2011 in Powai. The crime branch has so far arrested 11 accused, including journalist Jigna Vora. In the charge sheets filed against 10 accused, stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and the Indian Penal Code have been evoked. The crime branch is yet to file charge sheet against Vora.
The crime branch opposed the bail plea filed by accused Anil Waghmode and Deepak Sisodia.
