A jeweller has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the robbery of one kilogram of gold from a jewellery shop in Malad last year.
The police arrested Vimalchand Jain, 30, on Saturday after two alleged robbers who were arrested on Friday disclosed his name.
The police said Jain, who also owns a jewellery shop at Malad allegedly planned the robbery with Srinivas Murugan, 30, and Vishal Kamle, 27, and robbed jewellery shops.
Jain, being a jeweller, was aware of how much gold was being transported by some of shops. Jain tipped off the other two, who would then rob the shop, the police said.
Murugan and Kamle would sell the gold to Jain at a much cheaper rate.
However, the two alleged robbers fought with Jain after the latter started paying them less money for the gold.
Jain even owed them some money, because he did not clear their dues, the police said.
A police informer heard the two robbers discussing how Jain was cheating them and tipped off the police.
Murugan and Kamle were arrested on Friday. They were produced before a magistrate who remanded them to police custody till December 28.
During interrogation, the duo revealed Jain’s name, following which the police arrested him. Police suspect Jain’s involvement in other robberies as well.
