Two brothers who ran a jewellery store were found murdered at their residence in a Nalasopara chawl on Monday morning. Police are yet to identify the accused and are probing the robbery angle.
According to the Nalasopara police, Madan Narayan Soni Mandora, 42, and his brother, Dinesh, 27, were asleep in their one-room flat at Sahil chawl in the Moregaon area of Nalasopara (East) on Sunday night when the accused entered by breaking the window grill and strangled them.
When the neighbours noticed the broken grill at around 7.30am, they alerted the duo's sister who lives nearby, following which the room was opened and the two were found lying on the floor with plastic ropes around their necks and their bodies covered with a bed sheet. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
"We have registered a case for murder. We suspect more than one person was involved, and are ascertaining the motive," said Mukund Mahajan, senior inspector, Nalasopara police, adding that the bodies have been sent to a health centre to ascertain if the duo had sustained any other injuries. The police said they are quizzing the brothers' relatives to check if anything was robbed from the house.
