An unidentified man stole gold and diamond jewellery and a mobile phone totaling worth Rs 5 lakh from a woman’s purse near Noorbagh junction at Dongri on Monday evening.

According to the Dongri police, Lyla Ajgar Jethani, 45, who lives in London, was shopping at Bhuleshwar when the incident took place. She is in the city to attend her brother’s wedding at Mazagaon.

She was carrying the jewellery in her purse to show the jeweler at Bhuleshwar market what kind of ornaments she wanted.

However when Jethani entered the shop, she realised that her purse was open and the valuables missing.

Jethani lodged a complaint with the Dongri police on Tuesday.

“The complainant herself was not aware when the valuables were removed from her bag. It could have taken place anywhere between Mazagaon, where she was staying with her brother, and Bhuleshwar market. Investigations are on in the case,” said Aatmalam Gamble, police inspector of the Dongri police station.
