An unidentified person broke into a jewellery shop near a police outpost in Khar, and fled with ornaments worth more than Rs 25 lakh on Friday night.

The accused, however, could not escape the closed-circuit television cameras installed in Ambika Jewellers.

The CCTVs have captured his images and the police have launched a hunt for the thief.

The policemen posted at the chowkie, which is barely five metres away from the store, were on patrolling duty at the time of the incident, police said.

The store owner, Narendra Kumar, said when he opened the shop on Saturday morning, he found it had been ransacked.

The CCTV footage shows a well-dressed man, in his early twenties, entered the shop at 1.20 am from the back door. He removed his footwear and broke the locks on the showcases. He wrapped the jewellery in a piece of cloth from the store. He took 50 minutes to finish the job, the police said.

Senior Police Inspector, Mangesh Pote, said, “No one saw the accused. But our investigation is on the right track.”

Kumar, who lives nearby, has been running the store in the area for more than 10 years. “Since a police chowkie is located next to my shop, I felt assured that nothing would go wrong. But I was wrong,” Kumar said.
