The police arrested a Dadar factory worker, Nagendra Paswan, from Lucknow on Sunday for allegedly killing his colleague.
On July 18, Manisha Govekar left her home at 8 pm. When she did not return till late, her parents and brothers filed a missing complaint.
The next day, the girl’s body was found in the factory.
Paswan had been the prime suspect in the case because the girl's body was found in his room on July 19.
Unrequited love is suspected the reason behind 19-year-old worker’s murder, said the police.
“We had been trying to trace Paswan ever since the murder came to light,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Madhukar Sankhe.
He added that the Fatehpur (Utttar Pradesh) resident was finally tracked on the basis of his location obtained from cell phone towers.
Paswan had called the girl to his room, on the ground floor of the garment unit’s office near Dhanmill junction on July 18 to discuss something, said the police. The girl was found murdered the next day.
“Govekar and Paswan had known each other as they worked together in the garment factory,” said an official.
While Paswan wanted to have an affair, the girl had not responded to his overtures.
“On July 18, when the girl met Paswan, he caught hold of her.
When she resisted and threatened to scream, Paswan strangled her and fled,” the police said.
