A jilted lover allegedly attacked a 22-year-old woman from Vartak Nagar with a kitchen knife on Sunday. he then slit his own wrist.
A resident of Belapur, Raju Kamath (23), went to the house of Kiran Singh (not her real name) around 11.30 pm when she was alone. Her mother and brother were away.
“I was washing utensils when the doorbell rang. Thinking it was my brother, I opened the door and went back without seeing who was at the door,” said Singh.
“He [Kamath] came in and locked the door. He took the knife from near the window and started attacking me. When I started yelling, he gagged me and I fainted. When I woke up, I saw him sitting nearby. I think he was drunk as he was swaying. I opened the door and locked him inside. He then slit his wrist,” said Singh.
The neighbours called the police. Both Kamath and Singh were admitted to Thane Civil Hospital. Singh, who had minor injuries on her chest and stomach, was later discharged.
“Kamath and Singh met a year ago. Singh’s sister also stays at Belapur. When Singh met Kamath’s mother, she told Singh that Kamath is an alcoholic, gambler and is jobless. If she is fine with his bad habits, she can marry him. Singh then asked Kamath to stay away from her,” said Meghna Burande, sub-inspector, Vartaknagar police station.
“Kamath, however, kept on calling her but she refused to respond. Frustrated at being spurned, he attacked her,” added Burande. Singh said Kamath, a college dropout, had threatened her several times but she took it lightly.
Kamath’s sister said when Singh told them that Kamath was threatening her in the past, they had asked her to approach the police. The police have registered a case of causing hurt by dangerous weapons and house trespassing against Kamath.
