The Jogeshwari railway level crossing, the east-west connecting route for vehicles, will remain closed till December 8.
This is part of the Western Railway's plan to shut down all level crossings across the Mumbai suburban line. “We will carry out repair works on the approach road to the railway level crossing. Gradually we plan to close down all level crossings on the suburban line,” said Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations officer, Western Railway (WR).
Sources said the plan is to make people accustomed to using road overbridges. During the period when the Jogeshwari railway level crossing is closed, motorists will have to take either the Malad subway or Andheri road overbridge.
Railway sources said that level crossings cause up to 37% delays in train services every day because motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians cross the tracks even when the gates are closed.
In October, the WR started temporarily closing railway level crossings during morning and evening peak hours.
The level crossing gates between Bandra and Khar, Santacruz and Vile Parle, Andheri and Jogeshwari and Jogeshwari and Goregaon remained closed from 7am to 11.30am and 5pm to 10pm daily to enable smoother operations of local trains.
