The Kalwa police have registered a case of negligence against a doctor and a nurse from Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa after a pregnant woman was refused treatment there.

The resident doctor, Savita Utpad, a gynaecologist, has been suspended by the hospital; the nurse is Meenakshi Sonar. The police said according to the complaint by Sharada, 24, and Gangaram Ghode, 29, Dr Utpad had asked for Rs 800 for a mandatory blood test.

When the couple said they did not have the cash, the doctor allegedly told them to leave the hospital or she would get the security guard to throw them out. Despite her pain, Sharada walked out of the hospital with her husband that night and within 30 minutes delivered a baby on the road. The baby died the next morning.

“We have registered a case against the doctor and nurse. The doctor has been suspended by the hospital for negligence. We are investigating the case and no arrests have been made,” said J Babar, senior inspector, Kalwa police station.
