A 19-year-old man from Kalwa was arrested for allegedly killing his 15-year-old sister after discovering she was in a relationship on Sunday.

The Kalwa police arrested Waghobanagar resident Vyasmuni Pandey, a final-year commerce student, for reportedly beating his sister Poornima to death. A case of murder has been registered. Poornima, a Class 12 science student, was taken to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Senior police inspector Arun Sonde said, “Prima facie, it appears that the victim received a call on her mobile phone around 12.30am. Her brother inquired about the call and checked her SMSs. The two began arguing and an enraged Pandey assaulted her with a wooden stick.”

Sonde added that the victim’s father, a security guard, told the police that Poornima hit a wall and died. “She had multiple injuries including a hand fracture. The post-mortem report stated she died of a haemorrhage. We suspected the father was lying,” he said. Pandey has been remanded in police custody till September 22.
