The Kalyan police have arrested two men who allegedly gang-raped a Class 12 student near Kalyan railway station early on Tuesday morning
Based on the sketches of the three suspects prepared on Wednesday, Anil Kumar Pathak, 22, and Zakir Khan, 27, were arrested from Kalyan, the police said, refusing to divulge more details. A third suspect, Bhendi, is absconding.
Meanwhile, the city police and the railway police will jointly investigate the case. “Two special teams of the government railway police (GRP), and three from the city police will work together till the case is solved,” said Hirasing Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Kalyan.
Meanwhile, the women’s wing of the Shiv Sena carried out a morcha to the Kalyan railway police station earlier in the day. “We demand that administration take strong steps and ensure safety of commuters,” said mayor Vaijanti Gholap, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation.
Vijay Salvi, Sahar Pramukh (president), Shiv Sena, Kalyan city, said, “The incident shows that the poor state of law and order in the city. Women are not safe. We want to know what the police was doing at the time of the incident? We want quick action against the accused and the railway police should kick out the anti-social elements from Kalyan railway station.
According to the police, the girl, a resident of Dombivli, was returning from Pune. Her train reached Kalyan around 2.15am. She met her friend Devendra Kadam, 22, at the station and were on their way back when they were accosted by three men. One of them whipped out a knife and asked Kadam to leave and then allegedly gang-raped the girl.
