A 30-year-old motorcyclist died in an accident on Malang Road in Kalyan (East), which is being repaired, on Sunday. Eyewitnesses said the biker was run over by a truck after he lost control over his vehicle as he tried to avoid a pothole.

The driver of the dumper was arrested the same day and the Kolshewadi police have registered a case against him.

According to the police, Anil Raju Podawal, a resident of Nandivli in Kalyan (East), was on his way to Chakki Nala. He reached Malang Road around 8.45am, said Nayak Naresh Pawar, the complainant and eyewitness.

“Pawar said Podawal was riding his bike on the pot-ridden Malang Road, part of which is being repaired. He lost his balance and fell off his vehicle as he tried to avoid a pothole. He was crushed under the truck which was running at a high speed. He died of serious head injuries on the spot,” said MD Kature, sub-inspector, Kolshewadi police station.

“Podawal was shifted to Rukmani Bai Hospital in Kalyan (West), where a postmortem was done,” he added.

Kature said, “Driver of the truck Deglal Mehta, 24, claims this is an accident and that Podawal came under his vehicle even before he could realise it.”

A case has been registered at Kolshewadi police station under sections 304 (A), 279 and 184 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
