The Nagpada police on Sunday said they are in the process of determining if negligence led to the collapse of Gulmohar building in Kamathipura on Saturday, which claimed six lives, and have started recording statements of the contractor as well as the authorities concerned.
Police sources said they will register an FIR against those responsible for the collapse, if they find any wrongdoing. “We are determining if negligence lead to the incident. A case will be registered against those responsible,” said a high-ranking officer privy to the investigation. A case of accidental death has been registered.
When asked if any structural changes were made to the building, another officer said, “There is no visible evidences as of now to corroborate this but we are investigating this angle as well.”
Sources said no tenant has come forward with any disclosures yet, which will help them ascertain the exact reason. “The tenants were not residing currently in the building. There are hearsays and our preliminary task till Saturday night was salvaging operations. We will fix the responsibility after detailed investigations,” said the officer.
Six people were killed and two others injured when the century-old building came crashing down. The ground-plus-three structure had one tenant each on three floors and a restaurant and a paan stall on the ground floor. It largely housed zari workshops.
