Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the sole surviving terrorist of the 26/11 attack, has been detected with dengue, senior jail officials said.

Kasab, who has been lodged in a cell at Arthur Road jail for about four years now, is said to be out of danger and is responding well to treatment.

Meeran Borwankar, additional director general of police, jails, told HT that Kasab had been down with fever for the past four days. “Doctors from JJ hospital are treating him. He is responding well to the treatment and is out of danger,” she said, adding that there was no need to take him to a hospital.

Vinod Lokhande, inspector general of police, Jails, who supervises jails in Mumbai and Thane district told HT Kasab’s blood samples were sent for testing and the results came positive for dengue.

The Pakistani terrorist is currently lodged in a bomb proof, egg-shaped cell at the jail since his arrest. His mercy plea was rejected last month by the government, which has sent its recommendation to the President.

However, Kasab is not the first person to be diagnosed with dengue in the transit prison. According to officials, a jail guard also tested positive sometime ago. Borwankar confirmed that a guard was earlier detected with dengue while on duty in jail.

Officials said instructions were given to keep the premises clean and disinfected. Care was taken to ensure that it did not affect other inmates.

According to officials, they took help from experts and the municipal corporations sprayed pesticides to ensure that the menace did not spread. This exercise was carried out in Arthur road jail as well as Pune’s Yerawada prison, sources said.

Kasab gets regular medical attention because of his importance to India on international platform to expose Pakistan’s hand in terrorism.
