The key accused in the Kurar gang rape, where five persons including a minor allegedly raped a 20-year-old girl and circulated an MMS of the crime, was remanded in police custody by the magistrate court on Tuesday.
The key accused, Suraj Nepali, who was arrested from the Maharashtra-Gujarat border on Monday, was remanded in police custody till July 13.
According to police, Nepali was trying to hide from the Surat police and was arrested when he was trying to cross the Gujarat border.
The victim had been allegedly raped on May 10 at a secluded spot in the jungles at Kurar Village by five persons, which included two minors, Balasubramanium Nadar, 19, Nepali and the victim's cousin, Rajesh Jaiswal, 21.
Nepali had shot a MMS of the crime from a mobile phone, said police.
NCW satisfied by police probe in case
The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday expressed its satisfaction over the performance of the state government and the Mumbai police in dealing with cases of atrocities against women, particularly rape cases.
Acting president of the NCW, Jashmin Abrar, who called on Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik to discuss the police probe into the gang rape case at Kurar, said that the police had taken suo moto action in the case and galvanised the investigation.
"I am fully satisfied with the police probe and the way evidence has been collected."
