The Khar police on Friday issued summons to socialite Sheetal Mafatlal – accused of trespassing on her mother’s bungalow at Pali Hill – asking her to be present at the police station over the next few days to record her statement. Mafatlal, through her lawyer, told the Khar police that she will cooperate with the probe but will be unavailable for a few days.
Sheetal’s mother and Nirlon matriarch Rajni Bhagat, 76, on Thursday evening filed a complaint at Khar police station against her daughter, alleging theft, house break-in, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy to take over her bungalow at 38, Pali Hill.
Based on the complaint, a police vehicle was sent to the area. Six bouncers hired by Sheetal were told to leave the bungalow. The police, however, said they could not take action against Sheetal. “We will see what needs to be done in case she does not appear before us to record her statement,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.
Rajni’s lawyer Francisco D’Souza said, “The theft charges have been added as crucial documents are missing. Her mother is still searching the bungalow as Sheetal changed the locks. We have also added charges of criminal conspiracy as we strongly suspect that she is not alone in this. Her mother has allowed her to stay at home, so the police are not taking any action. Her mother wants the matter to be decided in court. It is not true that Sheetal used to come to this bungalow regularly. She only came here once after her marriage. It is also false that she was attacked and locked in a room. You can ask the police. She locked herself inside.”
Amid reports that Sheetal will file a counter-complaint against Poonam and Rajni for wrongful confinement and for attacking her, the police said that they had not received any such complaint as of Friday evening. The Bhagat family is embroiled in property dispute and a civil case is underway in a court.
