With the civic elections approaching, the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inaugurated the Rs3 crore Khar station precinct beautification plan.
The event was attended by Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, who said that even if the project took some time to take-off, they will ensure that the project is completed in eight months.
Under this project, the station area will be converted from a crowded place causing inconvenience to daily commuters, into a ‘pedestrian friendly station square’. A design wall will be developed where artists will be given space to paint and exhibit their talent.
“This project is set to change the face of Khar station and the BMC will take other such projects on major stations in the city,” said Ashish Shelar, BJP leader and corporator from the area.
The station square will involve the repairs and beautification of the existing area. The Kabutar Khana, a few metres away from the station will also be taken up for beautification and maintenance. The total area to be beautified is spread over 6,250 sq m.
According to the plan, the road outside the station will be made one-way. Traffic coming from SV Road towards the station will continue, but outgoing traffic will be diverted. A new parking lot will be set aside for two-wheelers making it easier for commuters who come to the station on bikes.
The pedestrian walkways will either be repaired with paver blocks, tiles or will be concretised.
