An affidavit filed in the Bombay High court has alleged that the girls from Palghar who had been arrested for their Facebook post over Bal Thackeray’s death, were placed under arrest on the instructions of Sukhwinder Singh, inspector general of police (IGP), Konkan Range.
Singh, who had carried out an inquiry into the matter on orders of the state government, had instructed the then senior inspector of police and in-charge of Palghar police station, Shrikant Pingle, to arrest the two girls — Shaheen Dhada and Rinu Srinivasan, the fresh affidavit filed by journalist Ketan Tirodkar on Thursday states. Pingle had spoken at length with Singh before placing the girls under arrest, it adds.
Tirodkar on Thursday sought an investigation into the entire episode so as to find out from telephone records who ordered the arrest of the girls, contending it was a serious matter as they were arrested even though they had not committed any offence.
He urged the court to initiate penal proceedings against police officers concerned.
Acting on his plea, the division bench of justice PV Hardas and justice AR Joshi directed assistant public prosecutor VB Konde-Deshmukh to seek instructions if the state government was willing to initiate action in accordance with law. The bench has granted him three weeks to take instructions and file affidavit to that effect.
