Three suspects have been detained and a police officer transferred for dereliction of duty in connection with the kidnapping and murder of four friends in suburban Kurar.

Ganesh Karanje (24), Dinesh Ahire (25), Chetan Dhule (24) and Bharat Kundle (27) went missing on Saturday. Their families alleged that despite alerting the police the same day, a case of kidnapping was registered only two days later, a few hours before the bodies were found.

The bodies were found with slit throats on a hillock in Kurar village in Malad on Wednesday after which family members of the deceased hit the streets, disrupting traffic on the Western Express Highway against alleged police inaction.

"Mohan Sankhe, senior inspector at Kurar police station has been shifted to Local Arms control room after the incident. There are complaints that Sankhe did not take the matter seriously. We are inquiring if there was any laxity," Joint Police Commissioner (Law & Order) Rajnish Seth said.

Another official said three persons suspected to be involved in the murder, have been detained and their questioning was on.

"So far, over 40 persons, who have links with the accused, have been questioned. These people include friends and family members of the suspects," Nisar Tamboli, deputy plice cmmissioner (Crime) said.

Post mortem report is awaited, he said.
