An eight-year-old girl who went missing two weeks ago was found murdered in a Kurla slum shanty on Saturday morning, in the third such case in Nehru Nagar this year.
In the earlier cases, one each in February and March, the girls were raped and murdered, their bodies dumped on building terraces.
The police suspect that the third victim was also raped before she was killed.
Sources said she was found naked, with her clothes lying at her side.
An electric wire was entangled in her left leg and there were injury marks on her thighs. Two locks were also found at the spot.
“We are awaiting the medical reports for a clearer picture of what happened,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police J. Khandagle.
The girl’s body was
found in the densely populated Vatsalatai Nagar slum at 10 am.
A local who had climbed onto the asbestos roof of his shanty to cover it with a plastic sheet for the rains reported a foul smell emanating from a vacant hut nearby.
He alerted some neighbors, who called the police.
The girl’s body was recovered and taken to JJ Hospital where she was identified by her father.
A post-mortem is now being conducted.
The police said the shanty had been lying vacant for more than two months, after it was sold by its former owner, Draupad Patil.
The police are now trying to trace the current owner to find out if he had leased the room.
