Sonu alias Wafi Khan, who had allegedly married starlet Laila Khan and was to take her family to Dubai, has denied the marriage took place.
“We have recorded his [Sonu’s] statement and are verifying some details,” said a senior crime branch officer, adding that he comes from a well-to-do family which has settled in Dubai.
Parvez Tak, the main accused in the case, had told the police that Khan and her family were going to relocate to Dubai on Sonu's behest, and he felt abandoned because he could not accompany them as he did not have a valid passport. “Since he had criminal cases in Jammu and Kashmir where he resided, the chances of him getting a passport were bleak,” the officer said.
However, investigators are not taking Tak's statements at face value as they suspect that he is trying to mislead them to build a defence for himself when the case goes to trial. “That is why every statement of his is being cross-checked,” the officer said.
In what could be a vital revelation, sources said that Asif Sheikh, Khan's mother Celina Patel's second husband, was also present at the Oshiwara flat when the family gathered together before leaving for Igatpuri on February 7 last year. This statement made by Sheikh to the police establishes that Tak knew about the family's Igatpuri trip.
Officials have said that they have not given a clean chit to anyone, and that others connected with the case are also being probed. The police is likely to record statements of shopkeepers in Igatpuri, who had seen the family on the day of the murders.
