A total of 89 items were auctioned and Rs 79.54 lakh collected at the auction ceremony of the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in Lalbaug on Saturday. The auction target for Saturday, the second day of the auctions, had been set at 100 items.

On Friday, the first day the auction, the mandal auctioned 75 gold and silver items in all, earning Rs 54.78 lakh in the process. “This year the turnout was better than last year and the value of the goods was also higher,” said Ashok Pawar, president of the mandal.

Major items such as the one- kilogram gold biscuit, diamonds worth Rs 6.5 lakh and a Cartier watch will be up for auction on Sunday, the third and final day.

All the proceeds from the auction will this year go into setting up a guest house for relatives of outsation patients who visit KEM Hospital and Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel for treatment.

“They cannot afford the treatment and don’t even have a place to live in, so we want to try and help by providing shelter,” said Pawar. “This guest house will be free and the facilities will be available to all.”
