Even though citizens objected to repair work on the shaky Khar subway, the authorities decided to go ahead with the work on Friday. However, they were unable to complete it.
The traffic police had asked the Western Railway (WR) to carry out the repair work for two days, until Saturday. Both the WR and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had started this subway to be safe for use during their pre-monsoon checks.
Road traffic was diverted through Milan Subway and Mahim Causeway. At around 3 pm, 30 minutes after the repair work began, and the subway was shut, people travelling on the service road along the Western Express Highway began objecting because it was creating traffic snarls.
“They started shouting at both traffic police and the WR officials who were carrying out the repair work,” said a WR official on condition of anonymity. The police were forced to shut down the repair work.
Presently bulging chunks of concrete can be seen coming loose, there are cracks on the walls, while the steel reinforcements are corroded. “We had started repair work with consultation and due permission from the Mumbai Traffic police. We will start work only after a new date is fixed by them,” said S. Gupta , chief PRO, WR.
