Madhur Bhandarkar’s troubles are far from over.
In 2004, model-turned-actress Preeti Jain accused Bollywood director Bhandarkar of raping her. On Thursday, the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court rejected a report filed by the police that said the case against him is false.
In her original complaint to the Versova police station, Jain had said Bhandarkar had first raped her in May 1999, then another 16 times over the next five years. Jain alleged he had promised her a lead role in his films but did not keep his word.
In May 2007, Versova police filed a ‘B’ summary report (which means they consider it false or malicious information) and said there was no evidence to back Jain’s allegations.
Jain then filed an application in court requesting further investigation — a request the court granted.
In 2009, the police again filed a B summary report saying the case against Bhandarkar is false. “Bhandarkar pressured the police to file the B summary report, and the police, in an attempt to sabotage the case, asked Jain to first prove she was raped,” said Jain’s lawyer Sushan Kunjuraman.”This is a unique case, with the victim being asked to prove that she was raped. This act of the police is condemnable ....”
Despite the rejection of the latest police report, Bhandarkar will not go to jail immediately. “...the court will now conduct its own inquiry into the case — the magistrate will record Jain’s statement on December 22,” said Kunjuraman.
