The committee formed to zero in on a site for the construction of the late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s memorial has drawn up a list of seven plots in south Mumbai, of which they will choose one soon.

While two plots are located at Shivaji Park – one to the left and another to the right of the mayor’s bungalow, the other five spots are in Parel, Wadala and Matunga.

“Descriptions and dimensions of these seven plots will be put forward at a meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, in the presence of the concerned authorities.” said chief secretary Swadheen Kshatriya, who heads the committee.

We have chosen plots which are either with the BMC or the state government and can be made easily available. All the suggested plots are in south Mumbai,” he said.

According to sources, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, along with senior Sena party colleagues, will be attending the meeting called to fix the venue.

It is likely to be finalised before January 23, which is the birth anniversary of the late Sena chief.

“Shiv sainiks associate Bal Thackeray with Shivaji Park, where he addressed them at several rallies, for years. But the two plots at Shivaji Park are very small, for a man of his stature. So, depending on what Uddhavji plans to construct in his memory, a plot will be zeroed in on,” a senior Sena leader said.

Once a plot is decided upon, the state government will draw up plans and set aside funds in its budget for the next financial year.

On November 17 last year, on the second death anniversary of Bal Thackeray, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, on behalf of the BJP, promised to construct a memorial befitting the leader’s stature.

In 2012, after late Bal Thackeray’s death, Shiv sainiks had held rallies at Shivaji Park for days, mounting pressure on the government to sanction the plot where the octogenarian was cremated, for his memorial.
