The additional director general of Police (Maharashtra), R K Sahay allegedly attempted to end his life by setting himself on fire at his home in Malabar Hill area in Mumbai early on Sunday.

He was rushed to Bombay hospital with over 50% burns and is in serious condition.

Police sources said the incident took place after a heated spat between Sahay and his wife.

Sources said Sahay, a 1986-batch IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre, had an on-going feud with his superior Pravin Dixit, which he had intimated to the home department.

DGP Sanjiv Dayal said Sahay also had issues due to his former post as Chief Vigilance Officer of the state transport body where he had detailed several irregularities.

The state government recently issued sanctions for an open inquiry against the MD of the state transport body, Deepak Kapoor, on the series of corruption complaints made by Sahay.

“But this incident has nothing to do with what has happened,” said Dayal. Meanwhile, Sahay’s superior officer Pravin Dixit told HT: “Sahay had no issues at work.”

“We have made a diary entry in connection with the incident and the sequence of events will be clear after we record their [Sahay and family] statements,” said Nisar Tamboli, DCP (Zone II).
