To make it easier for social media-savvy consumers to send complaints on overcharging for milk by retailers, Maharashtra’s legal metrology organisation -- which deals with enforcement of rules related to weights and measures -- has created seven groups on online messaging service WhatsApp and a Facebook page.
The move was necessitated by the increasing number of instances of retailers charging more than the maximum retail price (MRP) for milk packets, soft drinks and bottled water coming to the fore. Through the social media group and the Facebook page ‘MRP complaints’, the consumers will be able to directly address the officials. After sending a complaint, the complainant will also get an update on what action has been taken against the retailer on the group. Currently, the groups are created for Thane-Bhayander, Bandra, Andheri, Kandivli, Kalbadevi, Dahisar and Kurla areas.
“We are encouraging more people to form an area-wise WhatsApp group and add our contact number to it. Consumer involvement will put an end to overcharging by retailers,” said an LMO official, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
So far, the consumers could send their complaints to the LMO control room number 2288 6666 (10am to 5.30pm) or email it to firstname.lastname@example.org
“The attempt is to give maximum platforms to consumers to raise their voice, so we become aware of the problem areas and focus on rectifying them,” said the official.
