Nearly a month after a three-month-old boy was kidnapped from Mahim, police tracked him down to Kolkata on Friday night. A team from the Mumbai police crime branch, with help from Kolkata police, arrested the three people who had kidnapped Maqdoom Shaikh and were in the process of selling him off.
Maqdoom’s mother Mumtaz has been sent to the Kolkata children’s home, where Maqdoom will be handed over to her after conducting a DNA test.
“We were continuously tracking the mobile phone of one of the accused. He would switch on his phone for a few minutes in several days. The crime branch kept close watch on their trail and finally nabbed them from Kolkata on Friday night,” said an officer from Mahim police.
The police said Kolkata is the hometown of the main accused Jaggu, who is currently being brought to the city. The police said the trio had tried selling off Maqdoom in Mumbai. However, once they were aware of the fact that the police was on their trail, they fled the city. “In Kolkata, Jaggu had some contacts who would have helped them sell the baby. We are not sure if they were to sell it to a begging racket or to some couple. We are waiting for the team to reach the city so that we can interrogate Jaggu,” said the officer.
Mohammad Shaikh, father of Maqdoom told HT, “We had almost given up after the police could not track down our baby in the first few weeks. We are extremely thankful to them for having continued their search.”
