The Oshiwara police on Thursday arrested a housemaid on charges of stealing valuables worth Rs5 lakh from actor-singer Salma Agha's bungalow in Andheri.
The police have not been able to recover the items stolen from the 49-year-old singer's residence.
Agha had gone to attend a friend's wedding near Sahar Airport on Sunday and returned home to her Dhara Villa bungalow at Lokhandwala around 11.45pm.
The police said that she kept three diamond-studded gold rings and a wristwatch in her bedroom drawer but when she checked it on Thursday night, the valuables were missing, following which she approached the Oshiwara police.
The actor told the police she suspected her maid Chandrakala Bhalerao, 40, to be behind the theft, said sub-inspector Sambhaji Shirke from Oshiwara police station.
“The actor, in her complaint, said that apart from her 12-year-old son Ali Khan, Bhalerao was the only visitor to their bungalow. The maid was employed around 20 days back,” added Shirke.
The police picked up Chandrakala for questioning and following the interrogation, arrested her under section 381 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code. However, they have not been able to recover any valuables from Chandrakala's residence.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Agha said, "I would not accuse anyone unless I am sure. Chandrakala is the only person allowed into my bedroom where the valuables were kept. Now it is up to the police to recover the stolen valuables."
Agha had acted in several Hindi movies in the 80s and 90s.
