Major fire breaks out at Kalyan dumping ground, 2nd in a week

mumbai Updated: Jun 06, 2016 12:21 IST

KALYAN: Thick smoke engulfed Kalyan near Thane, as another fire broke out at the Adharwadi dumping ground at 4.30pm on Sunday. This is the second blaze at the dumpyard within a week.

The Adharwadi dumping ground is surrounded by residential areas, a hospital and a college. The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) fire brigade rushed two fire tenders to the spot. “We reached the spot within no time. Unlike the previous instance, this time only the fag end of the dumpyard caught fire. It took one and a half hour to douse it. The situation is now under control,” said Sudhakar Kulkarni, fire officer, KDMC.

Fire officers said more such incidents are likely owing to the rise in temperature. “The heat is leading to fire at the dumpyard. We will have to keep a constant watch on it,” said Kulkarni. A major f i re broke out at the dumping ground on May 31, leading to complaints of breathlessness among residents. The blaze was doused only by June 2.

In the wake of the f ire, 2,000 residents living near the dump yard were asked to vacate their homes as a precautionary measure. The thick smoke had affected areas like Maharashtra Nagar, Subhash Nagar, Adharwadi, Sathe Nagar and Wadeghar in Kalyan (West), which are 50m away from the dumping ground.

After the incident, the KDMC had promised scientific closure of the dump yard and that it would be shifted to another proposed plot at Barave village in Kalyan.
