The Malwani police have arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly stole jewellery worth Rs 18 lakh from a businessman’s house where he had been working as a nurse. The accused, who was arrested on Thursday, had fled to Goa with the booty and had been splurging it on casinos and women there, which helped the police identify and arrest him.
The accused has been identified as Rakesh Palande who was working as a nurse at Navin Kumar Lutra’s house, taking care of his 90-year-old ailing father.
Navin lives in Andheri while his father lives alone at Harmony Society in Malwani. Palande had been hired to take care of him.
On March 27 (the day of Holi), when Navin and his family went to meet his father to celebrate Holi, they suddenly realised that Palande was missing.
The family found that their gold, diamond and pearl jewellery worth Rs18 lakh was missing from the house. Navin immediately lodged a case with the Malwani police. The accused used to change his residence in Mumbai frequently because of which the police found it difficult to figure out his location.
“We finally laid a trap in Goa and arrested Palande from Calangute. It was found that the accused had sold some of the jewellery to get money for gambling in casinos,” said senior inspector, Abdul Rauf Shaikh from the Malwani police station.
Palande is also wanted in another case registered at Samta Nagar police station. A year back, he had stolen goods worth Rs15 lakh from his previous employer. The accused has been sent to judicial custody till April 24.
