A 36-year-old man was allegedly set ablaze by three men from his locality over a property dispute in Versova late on Monday night. The deceased, Rehmat Hasan Shah, a driver, lived in Flower Chawl, Sundar-wadi, which is located in Versova.
Shah’s sister Noorbano Shaikh, who lives next door, told the police that Shah had a tiff with three people of the locality — Savio Anthony, Sayo Anthony and Sanjay Parab. The trio allegedly wanted him to sell his house, as there is a proposal to redevelop the area under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme. Shah, however, refused to do so. The police have lodged a case of murder against the trio.
Shaikh further told the police that Shah had visited her on Monday to wish her on the occasion of Eid. As he was leaving, at around 8.30 pm, one of the three men allegedly teased him about his squint, she said. This infuriated him, but she intervened and calmed him down, she said.
“A few hours later I saw a man pouring some liquid over my brother. I quickly rushed to alert my sister. By the time I reached him, Rehmat was lying on the ground with severe burns. Somebody had poured water on him and there was a rug over his body,” Shaikh said in her complaint. Shah was rushed to Cooper Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sharad Borse, senior police inspector of Versova police station, said: “We are investigating into the allegations made by the complainant. There are no eyewitnesses in the case. No arrests have been made so far.”
