A 41-year-old man, out for a morning walk in a public garden, was killed when a coconut tree collapsed on him on Thursday morning.
Ved Prakash Arya, a resident of Versova, was a businessman and a regular at the ground in Panch Marg, Versova. The tree that fell on him was planted on the periphery of the garden.
Eyewitnesses said the tree fell on Arya’s chest. He was rushed to Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri west, where he was declared dead on admission.
Civic officials are clueless about the reason for the collapse. They said the tree was around 8 feet tall and did not bear any fruits.
Ramesh Pawar, assistant municipal commissioner, K-West ward said, “We have asked the garden department to conduct an inquiry, as the cause cannot be ascertained prima facie.”
A spate of tree collapses prompted the civic garden department to carry out a survey early this month, which found that more than 220 trees in the city are vulnerable to collapse.
“A coconut tree is generally very sturdy and does not need to be trimmed. We will be taking soil and root samples to find the cause of the collapse,” said deputy municipal commissioner, Suhas Karvande.
