The Panvel police on Monday arrested Sachin Chavan, 28, a resident of Panvel, charging him with abetting the suicide of Nilekha Joshi, 25, the girl he was to marry on Sunday.

Nilekha was found hanging from the ceiling by her dupatta on Sunday morning. Joshi’s family who live in Panvel, have alleged that Sachin drove her to suicide by arguing over marriage expenses and threatening to marry someone else.

Nilekha, who worked in a security firm in Nerul, and Sachin, who was employed as a machine operator with a private firm, had been in love for past five years.

Nilekha’s father, Madhusudan, said, “We had always opposed the marriage and told Nilekha that Sachin was not right for her. But she wouldn’t listen. She was madly in love with him. We finally relented. But, even after the marriage was fixed, we told her she could call it off if she wanted.”

Nilekha’s brother, Abhijeet said, “Nilekha had bought several gifts for Sachin including a bike, mobile phone, etc. We were also spending a lot on the wedding. So, Sachin was asked to pay Rs 60,000 for the marriage hall.”

Abhijeet said this had upset Sachin. While the haldi programme was going on Saturday night, he apparently flung the payment receipt at Nilekha. “He told her that his uncle was ready to give him 10 tolas of gold if he married his daughter, so he planned to marry her. He had also threatened to teach Nilekha a lesson,” Abhijeet said.

Nilekha’s mother Vaishali, said, “The two spoke on phone later at 2.21 am which further depressed Nilekha. We asked her what had happened but she did not tell us.” Abhijeet, who was staying close by said he had called his sister at 4 am and she had answered the phone. “I then drank some water and went back to sleep not suspecting anything. She seems to have committed suicide after that.”

Ramesh Ghadvile, senior police inspector of Panvel police station, said, “The haldi programme continued late into the night and the girl’s family went to sleep by 3.30 am. Around 7 am, when Nilekha’s aunt went to kitchen to make tea, she found her hanging by the ceiling.”

Ghadvile said, “We arrested Sachin based on the complaint filed by Vaishali Joshi. We are conducting further investigations in the case.”
