A man from Borivli was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly harassing his wife for dowry. The police registered a case against Anil Shah, 28, who works at a power company, and his relatives for harassing the victim Deepika Shah, 24.
Senior inspector of Borivli police station, Bhagwan Chate said, “ We have arrested Anil Shah, the victim’s husband on Tuesday. We are still looking for Anil’s mother Harsha, 56, sister Phorum Mehta, 25, and brother-in-law Ankit, 28.”
According to Borivli police, Deepika, a software engineer by profession, approached the police after her in-laws allegedly did not allow her entry into their house when she refused to ask her father for Rs.5 lakh.
Chate added that Deepika married Shah in October 2010. Soon after their marriage, Shah allegedly started pressuring Deepika into asking her father for Rs5 lakh so they could purchase a flat. “When Deepika refused to do so, Shah and his family began torturing her”, added Chate.
Borivli police said Deepika had approached them in April as well when her in-laws were allegedly harassing her for dowry.
“However, we did not register a complaint as they settled the matter between themselves”, added an officer requesting anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
“When her husband and in- laws began to harass her again for dowry, Deepika approached us on May 26. Based on her complaint we registered a case against her husband and relatives under section 498 (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC,” Chate added.
