The Borivli police arrested a 42-year-old man from Gorai, on Wednesday, for allegedly torturing his children.
Saminullah Shaikh (42), a scrap dealer, was produced before the Borivli metropolitan magistrate’s court on Thursday. He was remanded in judicial custody.
The Childline members got a call from Shaikh’s neighbours who heard the children screaming.
“The neighbours informed the NGO who lodged a complaint with the police and took the police to Shaikh’s house,” said Suhas Naik, police sub-inspector from the Borivli police station.
The police broke open the door of the accused’s house along with the NGO members and found Sheikh’s seven-year-old son and eight-year-old daughter tied to the bed with burn marks on their bodies.
Shaikh’s first wife died two years ago after which he remarried.
His second wife was not at home when he allegedly thrashed his children.
“The children were scared and had torture marks all around their bodies. On investigating, we found that Sheikh had been beating the children regularly. He used to come home drunk and beat them up,” said Naik.
The two children have been sent to a shelter home at Mankhurd.
