A 47-year-old man has been booked for allegedly killing his wife at their residence in Goregaon, on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Laxmi Duraiswami Arjun, 40, and she lived in Santosh Nagar, Goregaon East, with her husband, Duraiswami Arjun, and three children — a daughter and two sons.

The couple’s eldest son was arrested by the police earlier in a house break-in case and is lodged in Thane jail.

The police suspect the husband, Duraiswami, for the murder, as he has been missing since the incident.

Duraiswami is a drain cleaner and his wife worked as a domestic help. “We have learnt that he is an alcoholic and would often fight with his wife,” said Vinay Kakade, senior police inspector, Dindoshi police station.

The police said the incident occurred between 2am and 3am on Wednesday. Duraiswami had returned home, inebriated.

He supposedly then argued with his wife, and in a fit of rage, picked up a boulder and allegedly hit Laxmi on the head with it. “Their children were asleep at the time of the incident and even when Laxmi was hit, none of them woke up,” added Kakade.

Police said that on seeing Laxmi bleed profusely, Arjun got scared and fled from the house.

Around 8 am, when the children woke up, they saw Laxmi lying motionless, in a pool of blood, and informed neighbours, who in turn alerted the police.

Laxmi’s was taken to Bhagwati Hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.

Duraiswami has been booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and the police are trying to trace him.
