One person died while two others sustained grievous injuries after a truck driver lost control on his vehicle and rammed into them. The driver has been arrested.
The police said the incident took place around 5 am on Saturday near ONGC in Dharavi.
The driver, Babulal Vishwakarma, 37, was heading towards Sion from Bandra when the incident took place.
Vishwakarma told the police he fell asleep while driving the truck. He lost control over the vehicle and rammed into two pedestrians Chandrakant Thankar, 40, and Murgesh Swami, 21, both residents of Dharavi. The truck then rammed into a few stationary rickshaws before coming to a halt.
Thankar and Swami were rushed to Sion Hospital where the former was declared dead on arrival. Swami has sustained multiple fractures but is reportedly in a stable condition.
“The driver of the truck fled from the scene but later surrendered himself,” said Prashant Mahajan, police sub inspector of Dharavi police station.
Vishwakarma was taken for medical examination and as per his reports he was not under the influence of alcohol while he was driving. “He was produced in the Bandra court and has been remanded to judicial custody till December 16,” added Mahajan.
Vishwakarma has been booked for causing death due rash and negligent driving, not providing medical aid to the victims and driving in a rash and negligent manner.
