A 25-year-old man, who fell off a moving train between Vidyavihar and Kurla stations on Thursday night, died while undergoing treatment at Sion hospital.

According to the police, the incident took place around 8.40pm. Shailesh Ahirekar, who worked for a private firm, had boarded a slow Kalyan-bound local from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and was headed towards Thane, where he resided.

Ahirekar was travelling on the footboard of train. When the train halted between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations, he lost his grip and fell off the train.

Ahirekar sustained grievous injuries to his head and fell unconscious, said the police. Passengers on the train immediately called the railway control room and informed them about the incident.

Ahirekar was rushed to Sion Hospital where he died a few hours later, while undergoing treatment.

While the other passengers said that Ahirekar fell after he hit a pole, the railway police denied it. “We rushed him to Sion Hospital soon after we received the call. As he was unconscious we could not record his statement. Hence, we do not know whether he fell off after losing his grip or whether he rammed into a pole,” said a police officer from Kurla government railway police (GRP), on condition of anonymity.

The Kurla GRP has registered a case of accidental death.
