The Pant Nagar police, on Sunday, arrested a 43-year-old man for allegedly raping a19-year-old college student and marrying her against her will.

“The accused, Prahlad Lokhande, who is the president of the north-east district Congress Committee (Ward 128) in Kamraj Nagar in Ghatkopar, allegedly made an obscene MMS clip of the victim, which he used to threaten her to maintain physical relations with him,” said SM Suryavanshi, senior inspector of Pant Nagar police station. He added that Lokhande also had a case of murder registered against him in 2006.

Lokhande, who was the employer and friend of the victim’s father, took advantage of her financially weak background. “The victim’s father was addicted to alcohol and Lokhande took advantage of this. He would pay for the liquor consumed by the father and developed a bond with him,” said deputy commissioner of police ( zone 7) Sanjay Shintre.

The officer added that Lokhande would visit the victim’s residence and also get gifts for her. In September 2010, Lokhande came to the victim’s college and asked her to come with him to Bandra court to stand surety in a case against him. Lokhande, however, took the victim to a temple where he allegedly forcibly married her, said Suryavanshi. After three months, he took her to a lodge at Thane where he allegedly raped her and made the MMS.

After learning of the incident in June, the victim’s family wrote to the police commissioner. Following the investigation, the police registered a complaint against Lokhande on Sunday night and arrested him.

Police said that Lokhande has already married twice before forcibly marrying the victim. Shintre said, “He has been arrested on charges of rape, marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife, printing or engraving defamatory matter and criminal intimidation.”
