Man gets life sentence for killing sex worker

mumbai Updated: Jun 10, 2010 01:13 IST

The sessions court on Wednesday convicted a man for killing a commercial sex worker, who he was in love with, after he saw her in a compromising position with another man.

The accused was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The D.B. Marg police said Anant Late (25) was a regular visitor to a brothel in Grant Road where he fell in love with a Rekha Sarkar (30) and had even proposed to her.

“On September 9 last year, when Late visited the brothel, he saw Sarkar and some other person in compromising position,” said Public Prosecutor Dileep Shah.

Late went inside and started abusing and assaulting Sarkar. “On seeing Sarkar getting assaulted at the hands of Late, the customer ran away,” said Shah.

After assaulting her, Late took a blunt knife, which was lying nearby, and stabbed Sarkar to death.

“When Sarkar’s friend Reshma tried to help her, Late assaulted Reshma with the knife,” said Shah.

However the sweeper of the building Datta Gaikwad raised an alarm and informed the police, while Sarkar’s neighbours caught Late.

Sarkar died after she was taken to JJ hospital. The police arrested Late and registered a case of murder against him. During the trial, prosecution examined 12 witnesses who testified against Late.

Accepting Shah’s argument, the sessions court convicted Late and sentenced him to life imprisonment
