A 29-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping his 15-year-old sister-in-law.
The accused, Tausif Ibrahim Shaikh, has been married to the victim’s elder sister for 10 years and was working with his father-in-law at the family-owned spare parts shop in Masjid.
The victim alleged that on Monday morning, Shaikh picked her up from school and took her to Girgaon chowpatty.
“When the victim began asking him about her parents, he (Shaikh) told her they were waiting for them at a hotel in Mumbai Central and took her there,” said senior police inspector Sanjay Kadam.
“He raped her and then threatened to divorce her sister if the victim spoke to anyone about it. He even threatened to beat her up,” Kadam said.
The police said Shaikh then dropped the girl home at 2 pm. The girl’s family asked her why she was so late. She broke down and told them everything that had transpired.
Shaikh was arrested an hour after the FIR was lodged on Monday evening.
“Medical tests have confirmed that it is a case of rape. It was completely premeditated and planned,” said Kadam.
He was produced in Mazgaon court on Tuesday which remanded him to police custody till January 10. The victim’s family refused to speak to media.
