The Sakinaka police on Sunday arrested a 38-year-old labourer for allegedly raping his 15-year-old daughter on several occasions.
The accused, a resident of Sakinaka, had raped the girl thrice in last three months when her mother would be out of the house, the police said.
The incident came to light only after the Class 8 student stopped going to school and slipped into depression. Soon after the girl’s mother learnt what had happened, she alerted the police and filed a complaint.
Preliminary investigations revealed that after forcing himself on his daughter for the first time three months ago, the accused (name withheld to protect the girl’s identity) had also threatened the girl of dire consequences if she told her mother anything.
He allegedly violated the minor on two other occasions as well, the police said.
“Sacred of her father and the consequences she would have to face, the girl kept mum. However, she slipped into depression and stopped going to school,” said Prasanna More, senior inspector at the Sakinaka police station.
It was only after her mother repeatedly asked her if something was wrong, that the girl finally confided in her.
“We have registered a case of rape against him under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Indian Penal Code. The investigations are under way and stringent action has been taken,” said M Dahikar, deputy commissioner of police, zone 10.
The accused was produced in a magistrate’s court and has been remanded in police custody till October 5.
