The Sion police arrested a 24-year-old man with a country-made revolver and a live round late on Thursday.
The police suspect that the accused, Jivendra Singh alias Lallu, was on his way to deliver the weapons to someone, when the police apprehended him near Sion hospital.
Lallu was employed as a daily wage labourer in Virar. “ He had lost his job and desperately needed money. Two men approached him and offered to give him Rs2,000 if he delivered a revolver on their behalf,” said an officer from Sion police station.
Singh was told to stand near gate number 7 of the Sion hospital, where he was told that a person would come and take the weapons from him, the police said. The police, however, had received a tip-off about a person carrying a revolver and a live round around Sion hospital. The police arrived at the spot and arrested Singh from the hospital gate around 4 pm on Thursday.
“On interrogation, Singh told us that he was in need of money as he was finding it difficult to get a job,” said police inspector Anant Rahate from Sion police station.
Rahate added, “We are trying to locate the whereabouts of the accused who gave the revolver to him.” The police said Singh doesn’t have a previous crime record.
