The MHB Colony police arrested an 18-year-old for allegedly running over a 35-year-old pedestrian in Borivali (West) on Wednesday night.

The accused, Austin Danis Mathai, was released on bail after being produced before a metropolitan court on Thursday.

According to the police, the deceased, Virendra Sahani, a painter residing in Panchasheel Nagar, Borivali (West) was on his way to his residence after disposing off garbage at a nearby dumping ground when he suffered the accident.

“While Sahani was walking towards his residence, a speeding Wagon-R car came up from behind him and knocked him down. He sustained grievous injuries, especially on his legs, and was declared dead on arrival at Bhagwati hospital,” said an official from the MHB Colony police station.

The police said that at around 9.30pm, Mathai, a Dahisar resident, was on his way home after meeting a friend, when the incident took place on LM Road in Panchsheel Nagar.

“Mathai was arrested immediately after and was held under Indian Penal Code sections 279 for rash driving and 304A for causing death due to negligence. He was released on bail on Thursday,” said the official.

Mathai's blood test report affirmed that he was not driving under the influence of alcohol.
